The statue of Our Lady was given to the Church in 1933 and stood for many years at the front of the south aisle. The statue was moved to a more prominent position in 2007. The Virgin Mary, as the mother of Jesus, was accorded the Greek title Theotókos meaning 'God bearer', by the council of Ephesus in 431AD, which in Latin became Mater Dei, i.e. Mother of God. Worship is due to God alone but the angels and saints are revered. Our Lady ranks with the saints but her unique role in God's plan for salvation entitles her to a higher degree of praise since the incarnation (or birth) of Our Lord depended on Mary's freely-given consent.

Many christians ask Mary to pray for them using the words of the Hail Mary:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary , Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
Now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.
